Iraq War Memorial

While out on a very long bike ride this morning I was passing through downtown and came across this temporary Iraq War Memorial. Some group must have made very quick work of it’s assembly because just yesterday I juggling in this very same spot.

I would have liked to have found a higher vantage point as only about one third of the markers are visible in this picture. The view from the capitol building would have done nicely but that wasn’t on my route. It’s also hard to discern that each denominationally-shaped marker is labeled with the name, hometown and date of death of a U.S. victim of the war. As this is Olympia, this memorial is almost certainly intended as more of a protest than a tribute but conveys both intentions quite well.
