Portland Twilight Criterium

Last Friday Anna and I joined thousands of spectators lining five city blocks to watch cyclists ride a loop over and over at ridiculous speeds. Every minute for an hour straight, the pack would coming tearing around our corner, bringing with them a wind strong enough to blow over an inattentive bystander.

At speeds surpassing 30 mph, I found my best hope for a good photo was putting the camera into multi-capture mode and just holding down the shutter. The resulting random focal-lengths made for a lot of photos with just one rider popping out of the image (see 2nd photo for example).

It may not be a coincidence that immediately after watching these races, I rode the few blocks up to REI to purchase some cleats for my recently acquired bike shoes.
